Fair Housing

The landmark federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 protects homebuyers from discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin, religion, disability, or familial status as they pursue a mortgage, rent or buy a home, seek housing assistance or participate in other housing-related activities.

But nearly sixty years later, housing discrimination is still a fact of life reinforced by decades of explicit and implicit bias – and fighting discrimination remains a professional priority and ethical imperative for Indiana REALTORS®.

The NAR Code of Ethics is clear: REALTORS® must not deny service, be party to any plan or intention to discriminate, or engage in any discriminatory employment practices on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

HUD and the Indianapolis Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO)

The Indianapolis FHEO is responsible for the investigation of federal housing discrimination complaints under the Fair Housing Act as well as other civil rights complaints related to HUD funded programs in Indiana.
